There are things you can do to protect yourself, your family and you belongings while you are away. Even if it’s just a short trip or one close to home there will always be situations that you can’t control but you can prepare for them.
Always research the location you’re going to and be thorough. Look into the country, city, resort, etc. Know the areas that you should avoid and the different cultural, ethnic and legal regulations. You’ll also be able to find out the precautions that you’ll need to take.
Get a good map of where you’re going and study it before you leave. Clearly mark off important places of importance like your hotel, the airport, the embassy and other points of interest so you can easily navigate through the city. Take group tours or planned activities instead of venturing out on your own. You’ll still get to see everything that you wanted to but you’ll be guided by someone who knows the area. This will prevent you from becoming lost or from becoming a target for crime.
Try to pack everything in a single bag. This will allow you to move more freely and it is easier to keep track of all your belongings if you only have one suitcase to keep track of. Keep an eye on your luggage at all times in public areas like airports, train stations or hotel lobbies. Never accept an offer from someone to carry your luggage and never carry someone else’s bag.

Change some of your currency before traveling so you have some of the local currency when you arrive because not all Countries accepting American dollars. Also, don’t keep all your money in one place. Have some cash tucked away in case of an emergency or in case the rest of your money is stolen. Keep all bags zipped or locked and hold your handbag close to your body to protect against pickpockets. When you leave the hotel avoid wearing expensive jewelery since you’ll become a target for theft. When you are taking your money and passport with you for day trips or between hotels, keep them safe in a hidden pouch under your clothes. Avoid keeping valuables in handbags, outer pockets or fanny packs since pickpockets can easily reach these areas. Use the hotel safe when leaving valuables in your room and make sure all doors are locked, including the patio or balcony door.
Create an itinerary of your travels and leave it with a family member or a friend so someone at home knows where you’ll be most of the time. Include phone numbers and the address of your hotel in case you need to be contacted. Bring extra passport photos and a photocopy of your original passport. Keep these separate from your actual passport so if it gets lost or stolen you’ll have an easier time replacing it.
It’s great to get away for a week or two but even better when you get through your vacation and return home safely and without complications.
